Triathlons are a challenging way to keep
motivated and to add variety into your fitness program. My first
triathlons were at the age of 46. I did Beaver Lake in Issaquah
and the Danskin Triathlon with 400 women. It was very exciting
and fun way to focus my training. I began encouraging my clients
and friends, who didn’t even know what a triathlon was, to
also try their first tri. With a lot of support, endurance and
simulated race day training, all who started came across the finish
line with a huge smile and a few tears of relief and happiness.
Some people are still entering local events, a few have even traveled
to other states and other countries just for the thrill of it,
you can too.
Throughout the year, I coach individuals on a one-to-one basis and
in small groups to train for a full triathlon (all three events)
or just the swimming segment alone. This allows my clients to receive
individual attention and customized workouts. Sometimes the training
turns into an adventure, like with Gill who
has written her own account of an atypical workout one week before
her triathlon.

Swim*/Bike/Run and Transitions
Every year the number of adults
participating in triathlons is steadily increasing. There is a distance
for everyone from sprint (short course) to the Ironman (a very long
course) so you can participate at the level you want to challenge
yourself. This clinic is for both the novice (going to do her/his first
one this year) to the intermediate (has done a few), who wants to pick
up some more skills on how to go faster and last longer.
The clinic will include tips on
setting up your own training schedule, transition training (how to
quickly move from one event to the next) strength training and
stretching exercises, necessary clothing and required equipment. In
addition, specific training will be covered for all three events,
swimming, cycling, and running.
The clinic will be held in two
locations: Starting at 9:00 AM the swim coaching will be at Meadowbrook
pool for 2 hours. We will then change clothes and meet again outdoors at
Magnuson Park for the bike, run and transition training and drill
practice. In case of rain we will have an indoor location to do the bike
and run drills. If you want to eat, bring a lunch and drink for the
break between the pool and Magnuson Park.
